Makerspace Specialist

I taught fellow students and other patrons how to use the equipment and tools to learn how to achieve their goals and projects best, while showing them tools in the space that they hadn't even considered using. This included showing them how to use software applications like ORCA Slicer, Blender or Cameo for projects involving 3D Printing and using the Sticker Cutter. This was done on a variety of systems as the space held both macOS and Windows. I ran several programs such as my weekly mending class teaching students on how to repair there clothes both via personalized instructions and over-arching techniques. I've also given through instructions on how to do sewing projects while also being the main source of information of the subject when it came to the Makerspace.

During my time I taught at all levels from teaching some the very basics of how to 3D Print to the ins and outs of the applications we offer to those looking to get more customizable with there creations this level of flexibility when it came to teaching was always fun as it kept me accountable of how I provided teaching as someone may not even understand the language being used. Someone may not know what the words of the sewing machine while others may just need a second opinion on if the should use a french seam or a serged for there projects.

During this time I also worked with my coworkers on there programs whether it be just a second set of eyes or helping them take care of the space while the run their workshop or even being a second person for students to ask questions or help with during a program. While working here it was always fun to work with coworkers and build out ideas and programs together. I also had me closely working with my supervisor for figuring out supplies that would be needed scheduling issues or even if I needed someone to come in and help me. I've done events like this years Earth Day Event at Tacoma helping the mending table.

While also in the Makerspace I have also helped answer the odd tech questions, whether that be due to people looking for help from the Head of IT to just having a conversation with students and being able to offer my aid.

● Spoken with upwards of 30+ student tour groups about the space and have built community with students during my time of work.

● Taught workshops on sewing and mending events with the attendance of 20+ students.

● Trained countless Students and Coworkers on Machinery and activities in space over my three years there.

● Learned Library Systems and Organization for Makerspace Library (In addition to my School work)

● Worked with all ages and people helping them build community and maintain relationships with returning students to build comradery.

● Recommended supplies and was go to person for questions on Sewing and Mending during my time at the space.

A few of my main tasks included,

  • Manning library patron desk, (Checking Books In/Out, Answering General Questions, Helping put books away)

  • Answering patrons research questions at the desk as well as virtually.

I helped not only help with students research questions such as helping the find correct sources or helping them in figuring out there research paper topics but also in aiding them in how to research themselves. I found it most rewarding not to just show them resources I found but teach them what I did and how they may be able to do it as well giving them the means of information. This meant I kept up to date in not only UWs databases that are offered that students could search on the library page but also how to navigate the UW Library Search system when the had no knowledge on how.

I've kept up to date on not only the UW databases but also showing them the lib guides and how to reach out librarians on specific subjects if the had questions I knew they might get more insight from asking a specific Librarian. I've done background work with librarians on lib guides such as organizing current lib guides and their sources seeing what's broken and what needs to be updated. Along with this work I also helped students in daily library needs whether it be printing out or logging into something,having general campus knowledge or just checking peoples library's books in and out.

Gig Harbor History Museum

I helped catalog and archive clothing, books, photographs, and various other objects, as well as help with projects such as the I Spy exhibit and photos. I'm currently working on cataloguing a 100 piece collection of clothing from the 1960's in hopes to add to the museums digital collection. During my time there, I learned the museum system, how to describe objects accurately, and how to input new objects into the collections with hand's on experience in combination to my work in my master's.
